Good Evening!
I'd like to buy the Profinet IRT gateway but the "IRT" feature got me confused.
Is this module compatible with a very common Profinet plc like a Siemens S7 1200?
Has anybody already tried to put this devices in communication?
Thank you
Profinet IRT Gateway compatibilty
Re: Profinet IRT Gateway compatibilty
Hi,
I wonder if you have already any experience with ProfiNet. If not you should know that having a gateway is just one part of the business. You will need to set up a PLC program to communicate with the ProfiNet slave (RevPi Gate). This can be a hard business if you never ever have used TIA portal or other tools to program a S7 1200. I'm just mentioning this because most of the experienced Siemens programmers are familiar with the "Siemens language". ProfiNet IRT is the highest ProfiNet standard which is able to do motion control. IRT stands for "Isochronous RealTime". And yes any S7 1200 is able to do IRT but any IRT device can always also communicate in the original ProfiNet IO protocol without using the IRT features.
Please note that our RevPi Gate modules are all SLAVE modules and you will need any master in you network to exchange data with the slave. This would normally be a PLC.
You can do cyclical data transfer of up to 512 bytes for each direction to or from the gateway slave. The gateway is holding the data (incoming and outgoing) in a 1024 byte memory area . This memory block is cyclically mirrored with 1024 byte of the RevPi Core processimage from where any RevPi programm can reach this data as unstructured array of bytes. The application sw needs to lay any structure (integers, reals, strings, arrays, objects...) over these bytes.
Hope this gives you an idea of what such a gateway is all about.

Hi Volker,
thank you for answering.
The information you gave me are exactly what I needed to know. And yes, I'm familiar with Tia Portal and the Master/Slave communication.
The problem was that "IRT" that was something I had never heard before. Everything is now clear and I think I'll purchase the devices as soon as possible!
Thank you so much
Best regards
