Stepper motor control using Pi

Hi all,
I'm looking to use a Pi to control a stepper motor to do some cycle testing. I need it to control a reasonably powerful motor, around 3-4nm of torque, so I believe the Pi won't be powerful enough to drive it. I've seen that there are some driver circuits that work off the GPIO pins and use an external power source.
I'm new to the world of Pi based electrical projects, so I'm not entirely sure where to start. I've identified some stepper motors, but I'm not sure whether the number of cables/pins has a bearing over the type of stepper motor driver I choose.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
