EtherCAT slave standalone

Is it possible to use the EtherCAT slave as a standalone communication unit? If it is possible how do you configure it or transfer data?

No. The gateways are always to be used as pairs of 2 or 1 gateway in combination with the RevPi core. Please read the blog article about the gateway modules which does explain their functionality.
