smsc95xx eth0: Failed to read reg index 0x00000114: -19

Hello everyone,
I see this message in dmesg logs and the ethernet interfaces seems to be unavailable for certain time period. I flashed the revpi buster image yesterday.
I have only one revpi-connect so not sure if this issue is only specific to my hardware. I was seeing similar problem when I flashed the standard raspberry pi image but the error code was -71 instead of -19.

Hi Waqar,

could you please share a complete dmesg? Are there any additional USB devices connected (like USB-ethernet adapter or sth else)?

Yes. There is one USB device connected. I will remove it and let it run to see the problem is still appearing. I added dmesg logs to original post.

The dmesg output looks incomplete to me (missing things like kernel version etc)?

Thanks.

From what I can see at a quick glance is, that the RevPi is loosing it's usb hub with all devices (both ethernet controllers and ftdi uarts). Please check if this still happens with all external usb devices disconnected. What kind of usb device do you have attached?

These logs are from the time when the usb device was disconnected.

Usually I'd suggest to test with another Connect, but as you only have one you could try if this error exists with an older image too. You can download the older images from our server: http://packages.revolutionpi.de/buster/

This problems was gone for a while when we started using BalenaOS but it seems to be back again for some reason. I am trying to solve it at application level so that the application does not just stops working when the ethernet port(s) becomes unavailable for a split second.

We updated our kernel to 5.10.120 a few weeks ago. This kernel contains several (upstreamed) fixes for usb ethernet. So maybe you can test if your problem is still reproducible. Balena is not using the RevPi kernel we cannot guarantee that everything is working as expected. So maybe have a look at their kernel versions and which patches are missing.
