5V LED Strip with DIO

Hi,
i want to use a WS2812B LED strip with a RevPi and a DIO but im not sure how i should go about that.
Since my LED strip needs 5V and my DIO outputs 24V i was wondering if its possible to use PWM with 400hz and 20% uptime to get an average voltage of roughly 5V or would i damage anything by doing that?
I can't think of another "clean" way of converting 24V to 5V without having to use resistors and what not.
Thanks in advance.
